Tara Dowdell’s professional journey began with a strong academic foundation in government and politics. She attended the University of Virginia, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government. This educational background provided her with the theoretical framework to understand public policy and the legislative process, which would later become the cornerstone of her career in both the public and private sectors.
2. Pioneering Career in Government
Before entering the world of entrepreneurship, Dowdell made history in New Jersey state government. She served as the Director of Appointments for the Office of the New Jersey Governor, becoming the youngest person and the first African American to ever hold that position. In this role, she managed the selection and nomination of individuals to over 550 statewide boards and commissions. She also served as the Senior Manager of Government and Community Relations for the international shipping arm of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, overseeing communication strategies for multi-billion dollar infrastructure projects.
3. “The Apprentice” and a Pivot to Business
In 2005, Dowdell gained national recognition as a contestant on the third season of NBC’s hit show, “The Apprentice.” Competing against over a million applicants to secure a spot, her time on the show provided a unique platform that showcased her strategic thinking and resilience. Following her appearance, she utilized a buyout offer from her government role to launch her own consulting firm, successfully transitioning from a public servant to a business owner.

Formally incorporated in 2006, the Tara Dowdell Group (TDG) was born out of a vision to provide high-level strategic marketing and PR to “the good guys.” The agency, which is a certified minority- and woman-owned business enterprise (M/WBE), focuses on socially conscious organizations, non-profits, and government agencies. Over nearly two decades, she has expanded the firm’s footprint, recently opening a new office in the Washington, D.C. metro area to serve a growing list of national clients dedicated to social equity and public service.
